Planning a Summer Staycation in Style and on a Budget

Let me just say it. I love summer and everything about it. The heat, the incredible outdoor music scene, hitting the beach with friends, the longer days, and of course cool, comfy, colorful summertime fashions.

Here are the top five rules to help you create the ultimate staycation that will have you trending in no time.

First, you absolutely, positively must start with adding a few new pieces to your wardrobe.  It’s easy to find fashion muse’s everywhere this time of year, pairing this season’s hottest colors and patterns with pieces from seasons past in fresh new ways.  So it’s time to make the obligatory trek into the darkest corners of your closet and pull out a few long forgotten pieces to work in – before you hit Mayfaire.  J.Crew and White House Black Market are my personal favorites – especially for summer.  Whether it’s a flouncy, fringy tank, paired with a skirt or shorts – this is a great time of year to find it at a great price.

Secondly, a pair of cute sandals are a must. If you don’t have time for a pedicure– forgo the open toes and opt for a pair of Dockers instead.  My go-to place for shoes right now is Rack Room Shoes.  They always have my size and I’m sure to fall in love with a pair or two, possibly three – when they are on sale.

Third on the list is to choose an activity or two, some outdoor and some indoor just in case Mother Nature isn’t cooperating.  Our outdoor picks here in the Port City are The Battleship NC and hiking at Carolina Beach State Park – just remember comfy shoes are a must! Indoor activities are also abundant.  Catch a flick at the Regal 16 Cinema, stroll through the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, then meander over to The Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum.

Number four is to schedule some down time at the beach – or perhaps the neighborhood pool. ‘Nuff said.

And, lastly treat yourself to an amazing meal.  Mayfaire has so many incredible restaurants; this may be your toughest decision all week. Here are a few ideas. Keep it casual with the kids by grabbing dinner at Atlanta Bread, Brixx Wood Fired Pizza, Ruby Tuesday or Red Robin. If you prefer a date night, grab a cozy table for two at Roko Italian Cuisine, Tokyo 101 or the Melting Pot.
